Institutional Profile
Citizens For Justice was originally established in 2005
with the aim of filling the lacunae that existed at the
time, of organizations advocating for the rights of community
affected by environmental issues emanating from mining activities
in Malawi. CFJ initiation conception was to campaign on
environmental and economic justice, this has been broadened
to respond to challenges and threats to environmental justice
on advocacy and lobbying for maximum utilization of Malawian
natural resources to achieve positive environmental, social
and economic and sustained development for local communities.
There has been a gap in terms of organizations that articulate
environmental policy and practice to bridge gaps identified
to assist local communities in relation to emerging threats
caused by unsustainable utilization of natural resources
and inadequate and archaic legal frameworks which contribute
towards the root causes of environmental degradation and
natural resource exploitation. Hence CFJ had to establish
and position itself in responding to such lack of NGOs advocating
for this and hence we had to fill this clear gap in the
industry which is very peculiar to Malawi.
